Professional Athletes Begin Teaching Math, Science & Technology Concepts to Kids

Current and former members of the Kansas City Royals, Kansas City Chiefs, Orlando Magic and Orlando Sharks have just started teaching math, science, and technology to kids around the world!

As part of the My Sports Pulse™ Challenge, professional athletes such as Brian Waters of the Chiefs, John Buck of the Royals, and retired Royals Hall of Fame Pitcher Paul Splitorff have recorded audio and video questions that connect math and science themes to sports situations. As Waters explains, "You may not realize it, but when you play sports you apply the math and science concepts that you've been learning in school. Every time I throw, catch or kick a football, I'm demonstrating Newton's Laws of Motion."

The questions are downloaded to a player's cellphone, and they then text their answer, picked from a multiple choice list. Players have two chances to answer correctly and points are given out for effort as well as for correct answers. A trial run of My Sports Pulse proved that the athletes, along with the entire sport focus of the game, were a big draw for participation.

"With so much negative news today focusing on an athlete's on and off field actions and how they influence children, it is refreshing to see a positive program such as My Sports Pulse, said Jeff McLaughlin, CEO & Founder of Mobile Intuition, and World Champion and two-time Olympic medal winner in the sport of rowing. "Engaging students with technology and incentives, it showcases the positive effect that these world class athletes can have on helping children to learn—especially the harder subjects of math and science."

My Sports Pulse is a global, educational game delivered via IVR, SMS/text messaging, and video messaging to mobile technologies such as cell phones. By combining situated learning and scenario-based learning using sports themes, My Sports Pulse encourage K-12 students to take an interest in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM subjects), with adjunct interest in health, nutrition, and fitness.

My Sports Pulse utilizes sports figures and athletes to lend distinction to the program, and uses sports tickets, trips to large sporting events, and other sports-focused items as incentives to attract students.
